[News] APPD Victim of Crime - Car Stolen

7/20/2015

The APPD works hard every day to solve and prevent crimes in our small community, but in the last few days, those efforts have had to be directed at solving one that was directly against them.  On July 16, 2015, police were summoned to investigate a call about a stolen police cruiser. Upon further search, the missing car was found front first in an outcrop of rocks partially submerged in ocean water.  Times’ sources suggest that the car was driven at a high rate of speed over the cliffs before coming to land nose first in the ocean.
Local video footage was reviewed and police were able to locate and arrest Pearl Gabrielle Jane for alleged Grand Theft Auto charges.  The Times have not been able to determine if Ms. Jane acted alone or if an accomplice is still at large.

The totaled police cruiser was hoisted from the ocean rocks and hauled away by a local wrecker service to the APPD Forensics Lab for processing. Ms. Jane is currently being held in police custody.

[Life] House Hunting - Getting Your Piece of the Pie

7/19/2015

Summer tourist season is well underway. The weather is lovely in the high 70s and low 80s with just a touch of rain to clear the air. And while some locales are worrying about the increase in crime, newcomers only see the beauty of Asphyxiation Point. The demand for housing inside the city limits is at an all time high as the area's popularity rises. New buildings have appeared in older neighborhoods as both locals and the newly arrived fight for their piece of "heaven".  City fathers don't seem to be in a hurry to annex outlying areas, preferring to keep our small tourist town -- just that.  How can you find one of the rare spots to claim as your own?  Here are a few tips.

  •  Make friends with the locals and let them know you are interested in moving into town. People talk, and in Asphyxiation Point they talk a lot. Sally at the salon tells her customer Joyce she is leaving town. Joyce tells her client Sam who tells his wife Patrice and ---- pretty soon you know which home will be available.
  • Offer to be a roommate. Having your own space is good but sharing is fine too. Less rent going out can be spent at our fine restaurant or simply to buy a few beers for the gang at one of the drinking establishments.
  • Become a Peeping Tom -- in the house hunting sense of course. Watch the comings and going of folks and when you spot an empty apartment or home, watch for it to come on the market. That means camp out with a keen eye as most vacancies get filled within minutes of becoming available.
  • Watch the obituaries in The Times as well as the police reports. Deaths and incarcerations lead to empty rentals.
  • Take a job and commute for the time being. The more you are in town, the more likely it will be to find your spot!

[Life] Weekly Horoscopes July 19 - July 25, 2015

7/19/2015

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Refuse to go along with a change on the 19th, 20th and 21st just to keep the peace. Realizing the pros and cons and knowing when to back away from a situation that is apt to turn into dispute or loss will be essential. Discipline coupled with hard work and information gathered is the best way to forge ahead. Use your head when dealing with emotional matters on the 22nd and 23rd. Relationships can take a quick turn if you aren’t careful. Ask for input and share your concerns. Secrets will only make matters worse when the truth is told. Take the initiative on the 24th and 25th and you can make your dreams come true. Invest in a new beginning, hobby or friendship.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)): Concentrate on finishing what you start on the 19th, 20th and 21st rather than starting a multitude of new projects. Hone your skills and protect your position. Speak up and let others know how knowledgeable you are. Communication and interacting with someone with more experience on the 22nd and 23rd will help you put your situation in perspective and ensure that you have a valuable new ally. Offer an elaborate picture of the plans you wish to accomplish. Don’t let something that happened in the past hold you back on the 24th and 25th. Do your best to clear the air, make amends or walk away from situations that will leave you in limbo. The less left unfinished the better.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Decorate your space or entertain at home on the 19th, 20th and 21st. Your playful mood and generosity will grab the attention of someone who can help you improve your current personal situation or standard of living. Larger quarters, buying real estate or expanding the number of people who live with is encouraged. Consideration and sensitivity will be required on the 22nd and 23rd. Don’t hide the truth in order to spare someone’s feelings. You are best to be honest instead of prolonging the inevitable. Contracts must be negotiated smartly before you sign on the dotted line. Networking and interacting with people on the 24th and 25th who are in a position you crave will lead to an opportunity and positive change.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): A trip on the 19th, 20th and 21st will open a window of opportunity. Someone will be evasive or withhold information. Do whatever it takes to make a practical decision. Keep a clear head on the 22nd and 23rd. Overreacting to what’s going on around you will not lead to solutions. Work in unison with others and you will find it much easier to reach your goal. You may want to do something a little different to show everyone that you aren’t so stayed. Make a change at home that will improve your utility efficiency. Emotions will be difficult to control on the 24th and 25th. Someone will pick a fight with you if you aren’t willing to compromise. Find alternatives that please everyone.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Getting involved in your community or taking part in an event you believe in on the 19th, 20th and 21st will result in options you hadn’t considered in the past. Don’t rule anything out until you have taken the time to go over the details thoroughly. Not everyone will be happy with the decisions you make on the 22nd and 23rd. Lay out your plans in simple terms to ease any worry or concerns that someone might have. If the picture you paint is vivid the support will be offered. You need to take a break on the 24th and 25th. A break from routine will give you a chance to rethink your strategy and make any last minute changes that can alter your direction.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Don’t get caught in the middle of someone else’s battle on the 19th 20th and 21st. Limit the amount of information you offer and take the time to listen to what others say. Having more knowledge will help you achieve your goal and outshine any competition you face. Don't let setbacks get you down on the 22nd and 23rd when you should concentrate on finishing what you start. Nothing will be cut and dry or easy to deal with so plan to dodge what you cannot change and focus on what you can. You are likely to have a change of heart on the 24th and 25th regarding your current direction. Before making an impulsive move consider the consequences.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Participate on the 19th, 20th and 21st and you will pick up valuable information that will help you make a decision regarding your next endeavor. Learning, sharing and short trips that will give you insight into what you want to pursue should be planed. Secretive actions on the 22nd and 23rd may start off innocently but in time will lead to a situation that is difficult to explain. Keep everything out in the open to avoid feeling guilty. Emotional anger is apparent. Replace arguing with affection. Do something nice for someone you love on the 24th and 25th or take a time out for rest and relaxation. Make physical changes that make you feel good about the way you look.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Stick to what you know you can do well on the 19th, 20th and 21st. Problems will arise with someone who wants to do things quite differently than you. Stick to your budge and refuse to let anyone coerce you into taking on more than you can handle physically, financially or emotionally. Discipline will be required if you want to reach out and help someone on the 22nd and 23rd. Your gesture although kind and thoughtful will put you in a compromising position. Make it clear what you are willing and not willing to do. Stick close to home on the 24th and 25th where you have better control over what happens around you. Protect your possessions and your ideas from insincere associates.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Being ready is half the battle on the 19th, 20th and 21st especially wheeling and dealing. Someone will make you an offer you cannot refuse. Don’t let anything stand between you and getting what you want. Love is on the rise and a promise is encouraged. Someone will play with your emotions on the 22nd and 23rd. Ask questions if what you are being told doesn’t seem possible. You can only make positive changes based on truthful information. Cross exam anyone you feel has ulterior motives. Spend more time nurturing your relationships with family on the 24th and 25th and you will be encouraged to do what you feel is right and best for you and the ones you love.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): A change to your financial situation is likely on the 19th, 20th and 21st. Don’t trust anyone to handle your money legal or medical matters for you. Do your due diligence and refuse to leave anything to chance. A settlement must be considered but renegotiated to suit your budget. A romantic encounter is looking pretty intense on the 22nd and 23rd. Take time to be with someone you deem as special. Ask the experts for information you require to follow a personal dream. Don’t underestimate what someone will do or say to get an emotional rise out of you on the 24th and 25th. Stay calm, offer patience and refuse to retaliate. Impulse will bring about unwanted change with little recourse

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You can make positive changes the 19th, 20th and 21st that will bring you closer to your personal goals. Romance is on the rise and will improve your personal life. Discuss your plans and you will get the go ahead for a project that will improve your home. A celebration will bring you closer to the ones you love. You’ll feel anxious on the 22nd and 23rd when dealing with money matters, contracts or issues concerning children. Don’t let anyone push you into an emotional argument. Just say the word on the 24th and 25th and you will get your way. Take pride in what you do for others and enjoy the recognition and rewards you receive in return.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Someone will be watching the way you do things on the 19th, 20th and 21st. Be sure to follow instructions carefully to avoid complaints. You are best to keep your thoughts to yourself until you are certain you have your facts straight. You should pursue a creative endeavor on the 22nd and 23rd. Developing more skills or talents will pay off when it comes to making home improvements or offering your services to others. Put a little muscle behind a job that can bring you greater comfort and convenience at home on the 24th and 25th. Don’t let an emotional situation get blown out of proportion. [Life] Letter to the editor - The "Life" column

7/17/2015

Dear Editor

I have been one of your most loyal followers ever since I arrived in town oh so many months ago. The Asphyxiation Point Times has allowed me to keep a pulse on this town and its residents and I must thank you for the same. However, I have noticed a recent trend that I find particularly concerning.

I do understand that the "Life" column of the paper is more of a gossip column than anything. But the gossip section of the paper had always been balanced at the very least covering both good and bad. Unfortunately, the tone in the recent articles in the life section however, seems to have changed somewhat.

I run a prominent business in the upper part of town, and I would like to reassure the residents of Asphyxiation Point that it is very much business as usual. While it is true that the Secret Stash has shut down, a conversation with its former owner might just reveal he has decided to concentrate his efforts elsewhere in town. Sadly I cannot consider myself a close friend or associate of Mr. Jefferson and so cannot comment on his real reasons but isn't that what journalism is all about? Getting to the bottom of it all?

As for the recent spate of crimes around town, yes it is higher now than I have ever seen it. But you also have to realize it is the peak of the tourist season. The island is bursting at its seams and most business owners are profiting from the hundreds of people the summer has brought with it. It would be foolish to assume that the more criminal elements would not try to capitalize on the same and trickle in with the partying crowd.

Which brings me to the last point : The local PD. With the number of people who move in and out of town, keeping the peace and enforcing the law is no easy feat. Criminals can be here one day and gone the next. Yet the AP PD somehow manages to stay on top of it all. Granted some cases take more time than others... Last week's news about so many deaths (including one of AP's finest) is saddening indeed. But the AP PD did manage to nab the perpetrator at the end of the day. I believe the city's heroes deserve a round of applause even if their actions and motivations of some of their members have been called into question lately.

Please note that I am by no means saying NOT to report the bad. I think I speak for all business owners when I say we depend on the Times to be there on the scene whenever something goes down so that we may be forewarned. But along with speculation on what is wrong with the town, I would like to see more coverage on what is right too. I greatly enjoyed the business spotlights you have run in the past. I also wouldn't mind reading some articles on the booming tourist trade. There was a time when I recognized every person who walked into the Aristocrat. Now I barely recognize anyone. Yet coverage both factual or gossip regarding the same has been sadly missing.

Dr. Laszlo Kuluk
The Aristocrat

Response from the editor :  As you have already remarked Dr. Kuluk, the life section is more of an opinion column which a large number of our readers enjoy reading. However, the Times does appreciate your feedback and will attempt to publish more business and tourist spotlights as we have done in the past.

[News] Robbery Attempt Again! – Criminal or Clown

7/17/2015

After yet another botched attempt to rob the AP Savings and Loan, this time the same suspect finds himself a little worse off.  Wednesday, Mia Miller, General Manager at the bank, reports an individual entering the back shortly after she arrived.  “He wanted to open a savings account,” she recalled.  The man obviously new to crime passed his own ID to Ms. Miller.  Suspicious of the man’s nervous actions, she ran a thorough check into the man’s past find in him wanted on several accounts of bank fraud.  It is reported that when she told the suspect, “Nadia Violet”, that she could not open the account, he grew angry and pulled a gun demanding a savings account.  Taking no chances Ms. Miller responded by presenting Mr. Violet with an up close view of her gun, firing immediately and striking him. The NPC Guard was very quick to try to apprehend Mr. Violet as well.  Leaving a puddle of his blood behind, the suspects manage to escape.  After confirming with Ms. Miller, there Times can report there was no money successfully taken from the AP Savings and Loan.

Taking the matter very seriously, APPD responded in full force to secure the bank.  Police were seen investigating the scene and speaking to witnesses.  AP police continue to search for the man they say attempted robbed the AP Savings and Loan on Tuesday as well.  The suspect, Nadia Violet, is described as a male, standing 6’ tall with a medium build.  He wears an extreme amount of ladies cosmetics and appears to have some subtle feminine qualities to match along with his name.  He was last seen wearing a black suit and blue shirt and tie and it was indicated that he was armed with a weapon and thanks to Ms. Miller a bullet hole as well.

[News] Serial rapist on the loose

7/16/2015

Asphyxiation Point - In the early afternoon hours of Wednesday July 16 a woman opened fire on an assailant in her apartment on the corner of 3rd Street and Canal. The woman, who will remain anonymous, managed to scare the man off with several shots and he is still on the loose. Police were alerted and APPD Chief DeSanta arrived on the scene almost immediately, but the assailant had already fled.

When asked about the break in Chief DeSanta revealed that this was not the first time this had occurred. According to him the man they suspect has assaulted and raped on at least two other occasions and has yet to be apprehended. Police believe their primary suspect to be a man named Lee Adria and say there are multiple warrants for his arrest at this time.

AP Police also stated that the local Sea Plane service and Ferry service have been given the man's description and that they are doing "As much as humanly possible" to keep the island safe and apprehend the man.

While no details have been released at this time, DeSanta did say that his victims all fit a specific type of female and that he had not yet committed murder, only the rapes and assaults.

The AP Times will follow this story as it develops and keep you informed.

[Life] Costs of Crime?

7/16/2015

If you are in the habit of ending your day with cognac and a fine Havana, you will need to venture past the city limit's sign for awhile; The Secret Stash is saying goodbye. After America's half-century ban on Cuban cigars ended in February, the hitherto rare and dare I say previously illegal smokes were the choice of many elite local citizens, especially regulars at the Aristocrat Club.   Will the infamous deals still be made in the dim and quiet corners or will the gentlemen accustomed to their puffing pleasures take their business elsewhere?
Picture

Last week's brutal murders have caused some retailers to think twice about staying in Asphyxiation Point -- this from a raven-haired employee of one of the uptown shops.  Duo Savings and Loan robberies early in the week, just two doors down from The Secret Stash, may have convinced the store owner to vacate for his own safety.

A pair of new 7th street businesses have yet to open their doors. Coming Soon signs remain in windows. But businesses come and go regularly in our quaint town; some flourish in a tourism setting and others find it difficult during the best and safest of times. When asked their opinion about crime's affect on retailing, one prominent shop owner who chooses to remain anonymous gave this statement:

"I had no idea actually about retailers leaving, As there is a Boutique and a new Salon opening up soon.  It seems where one store closes another 2 are ready to pop up in its place.  But I will say about the current state of crime, It's very scary being a woman in this town.  But I'm sure its equally challenging to be part of law enforcement here.  I'm fortunate enough to know a few folks at the PD personally and I truly feel they are handling it as best as they can, trying to make the town safe for us.  Still I take my own precautions, try not to be outside alone for too long, and I think we all need to do this sort of smart planning if we're going to live around these circumstances."

[News] Public Park Haven for Marijuana Users

7/16/2015

Picture

After an anonymous tip to police, two young adults were arrested at the AP Public Park for possession and consumption of marijuana.

Authorities conducted searches of both suspects, finding 1.3 grams total of marijuana along with paraphernalia.   Both suspects told police they held medical marijuana licenses, but could not produce them at the time of arrest.  One of the suspects in the arrest was identified as Taz Svenson, the son of local police officer Toi Svenson.

The state has a medical marijuana law that allows usage by those that possess a registry identification card as long as the amount of marijuana that is possessed does not exceed the amount 2.5 ounces.
